Echoes of the Origin

Nestled in the southern lap of the Eastern Himalayas along the rolling plains of the Bramhaputra River, is Assam. Known as the ‘tea country’, Assam’s abundance of natural resources is manifested through its rich and aromatic teas. The unique fragrance, smooth malty flavours and full-bodied mouthfeel make Assam’s teas one of the best in the world. Assam, also known as ‘Asom’ means ‘one without equal’ and that stands true for its teas.

The history of this plentiful land speaks of traditions and cultures of the oldest periods of human civilisations. The notable rulers who once existed in Assam include the Ahoms. During the rule of the Ahom Kingdom, Assam started a new journey towards becoming a developed land of India.

It was a highly cultured society and their kings were patrons of fine arts, literature, dance and science. The Royals of this Kingdom maintained an opulent lifestyle which can be seen in their grandeur for architecture, traditional Assamese silks and scrumptious cuisines.

Amongst various other interesting ceremonies and traditions, Assam had a thriving tradition of manufacturing jewellery and ‘Gold Washing’, wherein the Sonowals, a community of ‘gold washers’ would extract gold from rivers and streams at the foothills of Himalayas.

Gold is associated with this region for thousands of years. The oldest record is found in Sabha Parva of Mahabharata, the biggest Epic in the world. It is mentioned that people from the banks of Lauhitya (ancient name of Brahmaputra), brought gold for Emperor Yudhisthira, the eldest Pandava.

Some of the famous gold-bearing rivers were Brahmaputra, Subansiri (Name derived from Swarna meaning gold in Sanskrit), and Joglo. Gold of the Joglo river was the purest and was used for jewellery of the Ahom Royal families. Interestingly, Assam is amongst the very few places where pure 24 Carat gold jewellery is used even today.

Apart from the fascinating legacy of gold, the most mystical and coveted produce of Assam is Tea, which is indigenous to this place.

Inspired by this glorious history, three Indian women have come together to form VILASA AMBROSIA and spread the Ahom Tales across the world. ‘Vilasa’ is a Sanskrit word meaning luxury and ‘Ambrosia’ is universal in many languages which means nectar or drink of the Gods.

Working with some highly acclaimed Tea Connoisseurs, our flagship product uses both solid and liquid gold and combines it with the most tender buds to create an exclusive artisanal tea. Putting in our passion and deep love for tea, we believe in presenting you with the class befitting the royal tradition of Ahom.
